There seems to be no slowing down in the growing phenomenon that is obstacle course racing. The second event of South Africa's largest obstacle course racing series the Jeep Warrior Race took place at the Big Red Barn this past weekend. The event was sold out as with the first Jeep Warrior and saw 7200 take up the challenge. The elite Black Ops event on Sunday saw a repeat win for both Jay Jay Deysel and Carla van Huyssteen. The rain played a major role in the outcome of the race making the already challenging obstacles even more treacherous to navigate. The men's elite race came down to the wire with lead changing hands a couple of times over the last 6 obstacles after early leader Claude Eksteen stumbled at his nemesis obstacle the "extreme monkey". Eksteeen had a massive lead going into the last couple of kilometers but simply could not complete the obstacle in the pouring rain. Bennie Roux and winner of the last Jeep Warrior Deysel exchanged blows over the last obstacles. It was Deysel who ran the last two kilometers barefoot who crossed the line first to claim his second consecutive win. Deysel an avid MX racer sacrificed racing at the motocross Nationals in PE to take part. Second place went to first time Black ops elite Thomas van Tonder took second. "Jay Jay was just so fast, I would see him after every obstacle and just push a little harder to catch him but at every corner he would just be further ahead" van Tonder commented afterwards. He also added "big credit has to go to the organizers and sponsors of the event making all of this possible, the vibe and spirit at these events really motivate you to push harder." Chris Viljoen rounded off the podium in his second elite Black Ops event. "I simply couldn't conquer the extreme monkey at the last race and I'm really happy I managed to get through it this time" an elated Viljoen added. "I decided that I will be focusing on the Jeep Warrior Race this year, I just love the spirit at these events and that sense of accomplishment" commented Viljoen. The elite women's race came down to a battle of attrition with all three top ladies getting stuck at the third last obstacle called the "unchained monkey". Previous winner Carla van Huyssteen was the first to arrive with a solid lead. The slippery conditions ground her to a halt and it wasn't too long until she was joined by Hanneke Dannhauser and Jetaime Ribbink. The cold wet conditions and rapidly setting in fatigue soon started to take its toll with the three locked in a head to head battle to complete the obstacle. Carla van Huyssteen took the win followed by a storming Jetaime Ribbink who passed Hanneke Dannhauser in the last couple hundred meters to steal second.

Images by Zoon Cronje “Through thin air & thick mud" The opening event in the world’s largest marathon MTB series kicked off the 2014 season in the quant Mpumalanga Highveld town of Dullstroom. The MTN National MTB Series driven by Nissan #1 Dullstroom is a new addition on the calendar of the popular series that spans five provinces over eight national events. The event attracted an unprecedented 2300 riders with the various distances to choose from: Ultra, Marathon, Half Marathon and Fun Race. The sharp end of the race saw some of the top names in South African cycling fight it out in muddy conditions. Following the event many commented that the altitude and route would have been challenging enough and that the mud made it extremely tough. In the elite men’s race over 120km it was youngster Lourens Luus (Team RECM) who originally hails from Sabie who walked off with the laurels and his first major win. The women’s MTN Marathon was convincingly won by Robyn de Groot (Biogen Toyota). Dunkeld Country Estate played host to the event and has all the makings of a new institution on the mountain biking calendar.
